The State of Washington will vote
on Ballot Initiative 522 in November. Ballot Initiative 522, also known as the “Mandatory
Labeling of Genetically Engineered Food Measure,” would require the labeling of
raw agricultural commodities, processed foods, seeds, and seed stocks that are
produced through genetic engineering when offered for retail sale. Currently, Washington law regulates the
safety and quality of food produced and sold within the state. State law does
not require any specific labeling of foods produced using genetic engineering.
For the potential fiscal impact
if the initiative is passed and arguments for and against the labeling of
genetically engineered foods, please see the Washington Secretary of State website.
